At CIS, we recognise that fertility is more than a medical diagnosis, it is a deeply personal journey that can benefit from a supportive, integrative approach. In conjunction with standard fertility care, some individuals explore adjuvant or complementary therapies to help optimise their overall wellbeing.
These therapies are not considered replacements for medical treatment but may be discussed as part of a broader fertility support plan in consultation with qualified health professionals.
In selected cases, certain medications may be used to support immune balance. This should always be managed by a fertility specialist or immunologist with expertise in reproductive immunology.
PRP is being explored in some fertility settings. This involves using components from a patient’s own blood. While research is ongoing, it may be considered in select cases under professional care
NAD+ is a molecule involved in cellular energy production. Research into its role in reproductive health is emerging, and interest in NAD+ support through lifestyle or supplementation is growing
B vitamins, including B2, B6, B12, and folate, play important roles in cellular function and reproductive health. Maintaining sufficient levels may support preconception wellbeing
NAC is known for its antioxidant properties and has been researched for its role in supporting women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Individual suitability should be discussed with your doctor
ALA is an antioxidant found in foods like spinach and potatoes. It is being explored for its potential role in male and female fertility support
Folate is the natural form of vitamin B9 found in foods, while folic acid is the synthetic form found in supplements. Some individuals may benefit from using a form called 5-MTHF, especially if they have difficulty converting folic acid
LMIT induces T2 Regulator Cells in women who have delivered a full term live born baby. LMIT is a concentrated serum made from white blood cells (Lymphocytes) extracted from the blood of the male partner's blood. The cells are isolated and lysed (broken up) and the membranes collected and concentrated. The treatment will usually result in the formation of blocking antibodies in the recipient, a reduction in natural killer cell killing power and a shift to a TH2 Cytokine immune response. This compound effect lessens the impact of the immune response on fertility.
Humira works by blocking a protein called tumour necrosis factor (TNF) which is found in the body’s immune system. It is used to treat certain types of arthritis and is also used to treat Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. It is also sometimes in infertility patients to suppress the immune system.
Filgrastim is a man-made form of granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF), a protein that occurs naturally in the body to produce neutrophils, a type of white blood cell which plays and important role in the immune system. This can assist in improving egg quality in stimulated cycles where an egg collection will occur, as well as increase the thickness of the endometrial lining of the uterus to aid in implantation when an embryo transfer takes place. An individual may benefit from Filgrastim if they have experienced multiple miscarriages or failed implantation with IVF treatment.
The aim of the Uterine PRP treatment is to improve the thickness of the uterine lining. A thin endometrium can contribute to embryo transfer cancellations and implantation failures. There are many causes for a thin endometrium with idiopathic, congenital, surgical, inflammatory processes, infection, and radiation therapy being among them.
SCORE is a procedure created by Dr Nick Lolatgis which uses the patient’s stem cells to try and improve egg quality. The procedure will involve collecting blood, harvesting the pluripotent stem cells and infusing them into the ovarian arteries. SCORE may be recommended as part of your treatment to increase the chances of achieving a pregnancy
SCUPE is a procedure created by Dr Nick Lolatgis which uses the patient’s stem cells to try and thicken the endometrial lining. The procedure will involve collecting blood, harvesting the pluripotent stem cells and infusing them into the uterine arteries. The good thickness of the endometrial lining of the uterus aids in implantation when an embryo transfer takes place.
Ensuring optimal levels of essential nutrients can support general health. Supplements are sometimes considered to address individual deficiencies or dietary needs.
Some individuals use acupuncture as a complementary therapy during fertility treatment. Practitioners registered with AHPRA provide services that may support relaxation and stress management.
NMN is a compound that supports NAD+ levels in the body. While studies are ongoing, it is sometimes considered in wellness protocols under the guidance of a qualified provider.
CoQ10 is an antioxidant that helps with cellular energy production. It is being studied for its potential role in fertility support.
Known for its role in regulating sleep, melatonin also has antioxidant properties and may be involved in reproductive processes. Any supplementation should be guided by your healthcare team.
Some individuals carry variations in the MTHFR gene, which may affect how folic acid is processed in the body. This may be relevant in fertility and pregnancy planning. Testing and management should be discussed with your healthcare provider.
Adjuvant therapy, also known as adjunct therapy, or ‘add-ons’, comprises a group of medical interventions that are given alone or in combination in addition to the standard IVF treatment. Although there is little to no evidence of the effectiveness of effectiveness of adjuvant therapy, there is certainly an abundance of anecdotal evidence supporting their use. Dr Nick Lolatgis has developed his ‘LOLA’ Protocol which comprises of medications to address immune issues which may affect a pregnancy.
Intralipid is a sterile fat emulsion sometimes used as a food product in hospitals for patients unable to tolerate food orally. Intralipid can be used for immunosuppression, to down regulate your natural killer cells (NKC) and improve your chances of conception and retaining a pregnancy.
Immunoglobulins are antibodies produced by B-lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell which plays and important role in the immune system. In the case of fertility treatment, Immunoglobulins are used for immunosuppression, particularly of the activity of natural killer cells. IVIG has been shown to be effective in the treatment of recurrent implantation failure. An individual may benefit from IVIG if they have experienced multiple miscarriages or failed implantation with IVF treatment.
Platelet-rich plasma therapy is a form of regenerative medicine that harnesses and amplifies the natural growth factors found in our blood cells to help heal damaged tissue.
The aim of the Ovarian PRP therapy is to assist with the restoration of the menstrual cycle, reactivation of ovarian function and folliculogenesis, for which it has been shown to have promising results. This treatment can be used for women who are peri-menopausal, menopausal or women with premature ovarian failure. It may be significantly beneficial in patients who are poor responders and are undergoing IVF treatment.
There are a number of ways to improve oocyte (egg) quality. Treatments can be used on their own or together. Our Egg Quality Medication Kit consists of prescription and vitamin supplements such as Melatonin, L-Arginine, NAD, Coenzyme Q10, N-Acetyl Cysteine etc. There is no downside in trying to improve egg quality at any age. Better quality eggs lead to better quality embryos
Human Growth Hormone is a small protein that travels in the bloodstream to stimulate growth. HGH is used in specific endocrine disorders. In infertility it has an effect on the follicular fluid and egg quality. HGH can lead to better embryo quality and live birth rates.
A Note on Safety and Evidence
Many of the therapies listed above are still being studied in relation to fertility outcomes. Their use should always be discussed with a fertility specialist, GP, or relevant allied health professional to ensure they are safe and appropriate for your individual needs.
At CIS, we aim to walk alongside you with care, information, and support, offering both medical and integrative perspectives as part of a compassionate, whole-person approach to fertility care.
