Funding for Fertility Treatment

Funding Options for Fertility Treatment

This page provides general information only. It is not medical, financial, or legal advice. Always speak with your fertility specialist, GP, and an independent financial adviser before deciding whether early release of superannuation is right for you.

Fertility treatment can involve significant costs, including specialist appointments, procedures, surgery, and medications. For some patients, one possible way to help manage these costs is to apply for early release of superannuation on compassionate grounds, as administered by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Accessing your super early can reduce your retirement savings and may have tax or Centrelink implications. It is not suitable for everyone, which is why independent financial advice is important.

Centre for Infertility Solutions (CIS) does not provide financial advice or manage superannuation applications. However, some patients choose to work with specialist administrative services such as Access My Super to explore whether early release of super may be available to them.

Early Release of Superannuation with Access My Super

Access My Super is an external administrative service that helps patients and their partners prepare and lodge applications for early release of superannuation to fund approved medical expenses, including certain fertility-related treatments.

They:

  • Organise and prepare documentation required for an Early Release of Super application

  • Help ensure paperwork meets ATO requirements before it is lodged

  • Support you (and/or your partner) through each step of the process so nothing is missed that could delay assessment

All decisions about eligibility and approval are made by the ATO and your super fund, not by Access My Super and not by CIS.

How the Process Typically Works

The steps below summarise the general process described by Access My Super. For the most up-to-date process and requirements, patients should refer directly to their website.

1. Obtain Treatment Fee Estimates

You request itemised quotes from your fertility clinic (and any relevant providers) for the treatments you wish to fund using your super.

Access My Super arranges a one-off telehealth consultation with a psychiatrist. This assessment forms part of the medical documentation required for the compassionate release application

A GP appointment is then organised to complete the remaining medical forms needed for submission to the ATO.

Access My Super submits the application to the ATO. The ATO then assesses the application and, if approved, your super fund releases the funds to pay the eligible costs.

For more detail about their current process, you can visit the Access My Super IVF funding information page. Other early-release superannuation assistance providers are also available.

Types of Treatments That May Be Funded

According to Access My Super, patients may be able to use early release of superannuation to help pay for a range of fertility-related and gynaecological treatments, including (but not limited to):

IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation)

Frozen Embryo Transfer

IUI (Intrauterine Insemination)

Egg, sperm and embryo freezing

Donor egg or donor sperm treatment

Obstetric care related to pregnancy

Endometriosis surgery

Other gynaecological surgery

Eligibility, documentation requirements, and what can be claimed are ultimately determined by the ATO and your super fund, in line with Australian regulations.

Next Steps

If you are considering using your super to help fund fertility treatment, you may wish to:

  • Discuss your proposed treatment plan and timing with your fertility specialist

  • Review the information on the Access My Super website for their current process, fees, and requirements

  • Seek independent financial advice to understand the long-term impact of accessing super early

  • Review official information from the ATO, Services Australia, and your super fund about early release of superannuation on compassionate grounds

Decisions about whether to proceed with fertility treatment, and which options are suitable, are made between you and your fertility specialist, independent of how you choose to fund your care.
